There’s one more reason to look forward to good weather this long weekend: it’s time for the season opening of the Rotary Water Park at Lewis Park.

Visitors to the water park will feel some extra spring in their step this year, thanks to a new rubber surface funded in part by a grant from Tire Stewardship BC.

The surface, made of recycled tires, will provide traction under bare feet, as well as extra cushioning in the event of a fall.

“This new surface will be a big improvement at the water park,” said Randy Wiwchar, the City of Courtenay’s director of community services. “We were looking for a solution that would make the water park safer and more comfortable for users, and after weighing lots of options, this one was determined to be the best. We’re really happy that Tire Stewardship BC supported this project.”

The water park will be open from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm every day until September. The park features lots of different ways to get soaked, including water sprayers, a water dome, water arch and more. To turn on the water, use the hand sensor located at the park.

Tire Stewardship BC supports community projects throughout the province. In fall 2011 alone, their Community Grant program kept over half a million pounds of tires out of BC landfills for use in playgrounds, water parks and athletic facilities.
