Habitat housing approved
Courtenay Council has given the final permit approval for a Piercy Avenue housing project.
The project, a Habitat for Humanity initiative, calls for the development of six multi-unit residential houses at 1580 Piercy Avenue.
Courtenay Councilor Mannos Theos says these kinds of permits provides hope for families.
"Providing housing that may be ground-breaking, landmark type of homes that this project that this project is going to give," said Theos. "It will put Courtenay on the map as a community that will be housing these type of homes."
The application for the project was brought before council back in December of 2011 and was given the go-ahead after some variances required at the advice of city staff.
"There is a little give and take,"added Theos." In this case I believe we were successful in achieving a lot of goals in terms of putting out the best possible out there, to help the most amount of people possible."
Courtenay Council voted unanimously in favour of the final permit development approval.
Habitat for Humanity has said the project will be constructed by a mixture of community involvement and support; from volunteer to seasoned professionals.
One unit will be funded and constructed by teams on the Jet FM Build, while another unit is being supported by the all-female Women Build.
