4.7 quivers waters off Vancouver Island
Most people slept through it, but a small earthquake was recorded off the west coast of Vancouver Island shortly before 6:00 a.m. Friday morning. The 4.7 magnitude quake was centered nearly 200 kilometres west of Port Hardy.
Seismologist Taimi Mulder said it wouldn’t have affected people.
“You’d probably have to have a minimum of about a 6.0 to 6.5 for someone to actually feel it at that distance of 150 km,” she said. “We have several of these magnitude '4s' every year, it’s not anything different than what we’ve seen over the past 30 years of monitoring with instrumentation.”
In February, a quake measuring 5.7 was recorded in the same region.
