A $24,000 New Horizons Seniors Grant from the Federal Government will help seniors and youth cyclists brush up on the rules of the road.

"The grant will help in education efforts for seniors and youth," explained Margaret Harris, Comox Valley Cycling Coalition President.

"The idea is to teach seniors safe cycling and to follow the rules of the road and then ask some of the seniors to volunteer to help with the cycling rodeos we are currently running through the school system."

Harris says raising awareness on the fundamentals is crucial.

"A lot of people do not know what the rules of the road are for cyclists and thats both for cylists and for drivers. Cycling rules are not actually taught when people take their driving test. Our concern is that people should know what they should be doing on the road, where they should be and how to be visible and predictable and what they should be wearing."

The New Horizons Grant was recently announced by Vancouver Island North MP John Duncan.
